"Porque la virtud consiste en tres cosas: la primera, es conocer la verdadera naturaleza de las cosas, sus relaciones, y sus propiedades, y como consecuencia de este conocimiento, el principio de donde procede y cúal es su causa; la segunda, en reprimir esos movimientos ciegos del alma, que los griegos llaman "paté", y someter el apetito que denominan "ormás" a la obediencia de la razón; la tercera, es saber vivir con la máxima moderación y prudencia con las personas con quienes convivimos, a fin de conseguir, con su ayuda e industria, cumplir y colmar todas cuantas necesidades exige nuestra naturaleza; y al mismo tiempo, por medio de ellos, rechazar el mal que se nos quiera hacer, y obtener de quienes intentan perjudicarnos, la satisfacción y el castigo que mediante las leyes nos consientan la humanidad y la justicia."
